This has been a public safety issue right from the start, what saddens me is it has taken threats to law enforcement to get anyone to listen to that side of the argument. Having this information not just publicly available but being presented in a media arena is just so far from reasonable it's scary. I hope they do something about this sooner than later before someone gets hurt.

Judge Jean Pirro(ret) summed this up prefectly. Her name was on this list and she let loose both barrels at this paper. To paraphrase she said "they just put names of women who left their abusive spouses, former and current prosecutors, judges, correction and police officers on a map for anyone who has a beef with them to settle".

She also said "the freedom of information law does not apply when it puts the public safety at risk and bet your ass you're going to see some lawsuits come from this".

My home state of Illinois is as anti gun as any state is and a newspaper tried to do this exact thing last yr so our own politicians knew how bad this was and pushed through a law in less than 24hrs to make gun owners names private by state law.

I saw on TV where the media that started this has now employed armed guards at their facility. Kinda makes you think what kinda of cowards they really are.

Freedom of the press only goes so far.

Journal News gun permit map used by burglars to target White Plains home?

A White Plains residence pinpointed on a controversial handgun permit database was burglarized Saturday, and the burglars' target was the homeowner's gun safe.

At least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday but were unsuccessful in an attempt to open the safe, which contained legally owned weapons, according to a law enforcement source. One suspect was taken into custody, the source said.

The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues.
