For some unknown reason, the administration at my agency saw fit to interrupt my four day weekend to qualify some of the reserves and constables. I wasnt very happy about it, but I will never turn down the opportunity to shoot ammo I dont have to pay for.
I always try to make the best of every opportunity to train and today I learned I have some lightly used Blackhawk Serpa level 1 holsters for sale.
One of the Constables was wearing a Serpa level III duty holster. Half way through a volley that followed a prone position volley he raised his hand to advise he was having trouble. His holster had locked up and would not release his weapon. As seen in the photo below a small rock had slipped in behind the index finger latch. This prevented the latch from releasing the weapon. It appeared as though the rock had become lodged in the holster while he was in the prone position. The index finger latch is the same on all the Serpas regardless of the retention level. Not a good design.

In the Serpa line Blackhawk makes a duty, tactical and concealment holster. They all have the same index finger actuated lever to release the weapon. That is what failed on the line today. Initially I was attracted to the Serpa because it had all the same mechanics for the concealment and duty holster. I see from their website that they have a safety recall but not for this problem. After talking to a few other guys I find this is a known problem they will not address. I have three of their Serpa concealment holsters I will be taking out of service for this reason.
Their website shows the holsters I am talking about; its the three on the top.
