So, got out to try out the new rifle on Weds. Been a busy week, but I'm back on duty now so I have some time (lol).
The break in process is a pain in the @$$. clean after every round for the first 10, then after every 10-20 until you put 200-300 thru it.
I have a target board I made (can't believe hasn't fallen apart yet) that I brought out, but for the first 10 I was just shooting at my little orange target cube thingy- can't remember what they're actually called. That took a while. Once I got used to the HK style sight it was a pleasure to shoot. The delayed roller block mechanism really takes the punch out of recoil, and the recoil is perceptively delayed- enough to highlight reactive compensation (jerking). Very stable and quickly back on target.
Around the time I finished that up My buddy Timm arrived. Set up the target board at 25 just to see how on the irons were, and they were perfect at that distance. Took it out to 50 and was center punching paper plates from standing. Timm had the same experience. Timm is definitely a shooter but only has experience w/bolt guns and he definitely jerked it a few times until he got the hang of it.
Timm brought out his little orange rubber target too, so we set them both on a berm about 150 out. Iron sights at that distance trying to hit something the size of a softball was a challenge for my eyes but I got some consistent hits with the irons. I then put a 2.5x scout scope on it that I took off of an SKS. The PTR comes with a built in rail and it was just long enough with forward set base I had the scope on. Without making any adjustments to the scope I was knocking the hell out of the rubber bouncy targets from prone. Standing was another story, but that's the shooter not the rifle....
I brought my elk gun out, a Thompson center 7mmRemMag w/leupold rifleman 3-9, and my sub2000 (glock 40). With the TC 150 was easy and any miss was still hitting the dirt hard enough to move the targets. Restored some confidence in that set up as it got beat pretty hard coming out of my last hunt and I wasn't trusting that it was still dialed in. My buddy Timm also brought his 242 and it was pinpoint at that range. He also had fun with the the sub2000, or as he called it "the weirdest looking gun Ive ever shot".
Out of maybe 80 rounds (I was on a tight schedule, we had tickets for Willie & Allison Krause that night!) I had 2 failure to feed. Apparently this isn't uncommon until the bolt carrier gets "broken in".
So, a spendy rifle but definitely not a toy. Its solid, shoulders nicely, I'd say lower recoil than an AK or SKS, and the sights work well once you get used to them. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to shoot the affordable 7.62 but wants something different than a commie gun. I debated between this and a few of the AR platforms that are being chambered for the round. I think I made a good call. If I can ever get the glass I want I think it will be a very formidable weapon for both CQB and medium range.

So, I ended up with a Primary Arms fixed 4x scope. Comes with a reticle made for 7.63x39, both illuminated and etched on to the glass (so not battery dependent). This reticle has drops calculated and marked, along with windage/running target/& a rangeing system that seems fairly intuitive once you understand how it works. I wanted the variable 1-6x version but they are not in production and I can't find a gen2 anywhere for sale.
Seems decent, didn't get it til afternoon yesterday and am working for the next 2 days so haven't had it out in the hills yet. Looking forward to seeing how the set up works for me.
Anyone use the PA ACSS reticle?
