I put this up on the OG and got a few responses, but not alot of real world info. So I'll ask here too.

I've been toying with the idea of putting a scout scope on one of my SKSs. Its about a waste of time to try to scope a traditional SKS from all I've seen, the reciever cover types just don't hold zero & you have to pull & re-zero each time you strip the weapon. So I've been learning about "other" options for optics.

Have a forward rail on one of my SKSs but it seems too far forward for a scout scope. Would work with a halo sight I would imagine tho. I stumbled across these on an SKS forum, http://scoutscopes.c.....-anodized/ and the mount seems pretty bomber and puts the scope at the mid to far range of a reasonble eye relief.

Anybody here use these or had a chance to play with one? at around $70 it seems reasonable to give one a shot unless somebody can talk me out of it.

tried to post a pic, not sure if it'll work-MM

In researching the best way to add magnified optics to an SKS, as opposed to just a dot/halo on the gas tube, I came across alot of interesting things regarding the concept of a Scout Rifle. Generally, the principles echo alot of what many of consider when we are thinking about defending the homeplace.

A good description of what constitutes a Scout Rifle-

“a general-purpose rifle is a conveniently portable, individually operated firearm, capable of striking a single decisive blow, on a live target of up to 200 kilos in weight, at any distance at which the operator can shoot with the precision necessary to place a shot in a vital area of the target.”

-Lt Col Jeff Cooper

a good, short, primer on the concepts (ans SKS specific)

A longer one from Wiki

would love to hear your guys thoughts on this topic!

EDIT to add http://www.scoutrifle.org/

an interesting forum if you want to nerd out & don't have enough daily stops on these sites of web...

Me too!

I will likely give it a try. Will use either a scout specific scope (extended eye relief) or maybe a pistool scoope (maybe). 2X-3X. Not spendy, cause i have no idea if i'll like it. If I don't i don't wannt to be ouut too much.

the more i look into the scout riifle cooncept, the more i like it.

Scout rifles usually use low powered optics with a long eye relief, very similar to the pistol scopes and have a typical style crosshair.

They are not intended for CQB and quick reflex sight systems. The SKS is a great weapon system but it has its short comings. A good reflex site set closer to the user would serve you better on an SKS.

As you were saying earlier about the re-zeroing the scope after removing the dust cover. I had the same problem until I bought a UTG rail. It was so tight fitting that I had to fit the cover to the gun. It locked up tight and returned to zero every time. Might want to look into it, may help you.

Good article on scout scopes I used when mounting my scope on my m1 carbine:

http://www.chuckhawk.....scopes.htm

I use this scope:

http://www.midwayusa.....icle-matte

Good rings on an sks. Mount the scope under max magnification as the eye relief is shortest.

And the monkey presses the button.

Oh, I forgot to add...you can use an off set rail on the one you picked out and a small reflex sight. Traditional shouldering of rifle equals scout scope for mid range target. Can't rifle to 11 o'clock for reflex and CQB. Set up like this on a carbine is a utilitarian tool

And the monkey presses the button.

i like the looks of that scope, exactly what I was looking for. Except the eye releif looks too short for me. I have long arms & set up probably a longer lop than most. so i think I need an ER of around 14-16", which has been hard to find.
