I'll be grabbing my first .22 in a few weeks and while I have seen a fair amount of information on zeroing a scope, I've not been able to find a lot of information on the setup and care of open sights. If I purchase a rifle with open sights will I need to go through a process similar to a scope where I adjust the sights? if the sights come set/once I set the sights, is it a set it and forget it thing, provided the rifle does not take a serious hit off something?
I will most likely start with a Savage MKII if that makes a difference.

If staying with the open sights on the rifle I would recommend buying a different rifle.
You can pick up some straight shOOting Anshutz's rifles cheap. Start with a target rifle or even a sport version. Learn aperture sights and forget about the old time open sights.
You should be good at sighting that rifle in at 50 meters with iron or scope. Bag it like it is a heavy hitter and throw 3 rounds through it.
Mark the shots at your bench and put through two after corrections. You should be spot on.
If using iron target sights you will now be good up to 150 meters with just wind and elevation changes. Myself with a poinker round I want to be able to pull off the shot not a scope.
To answer the actual question, most iron open sights do not have a lot of choices for shooting adjustments. Presets are useless, the manual will tell you the test fire distance. It is usually a joke distance that you are not going to be shOOting at anyways.
If your first .22 I would go with a good used heavy barrel competition sport rifle.
Impress the ladies. eh

spent yesterday messing with the open sights on the 22 i bought the lady for xmas. was shooting low left consistantly (pretty impressed with the groupings the housekeeper was putting together, i must say).GSG 522SD.
went to the range yesterday and got it on center but still shoots low. no options to adjust verticle on this dam thing, lol. guess ima have to scdope it for her. which defeats the purpose completely as I wanted her to learn & get comfortable w/open sights.
