either on the sks boards or maybe scout rifle.com there were several 1st person accounts of this stuff. the general concensus was that a "scary black rifle" stood out alot more than a "hunting" rifle. With a "hunting" rifle, you were taken as just a regular fella trying to stay safe, and with a black rifle you were percieved as a marauder or just looking for a reason to shoot people.
just something to think about.
there was also alot of discussion regarding the merits of concealable/disquiseable weapons (folding stocks, weapons that fit in backpacks) vs blatent shows of force. I don't know if I can find that stuff again but it was fascinating. Definately reinforced my attitude of "bugging in" & being on good terms with your neighbors vs getting out of dodge.
