Huh, figured it would have been mandatory since Charles Whitman
The University of Texas' giant main campus in Austin will allow handguns in classrooms, the school's president said Wednesday — even though he opposes the idea.
Gregory L. Fenves, who became president of the university last June, just two days after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law allowing concealed handguns on Texas' college campuses, called the decision his greatest challenge so far, in aletter to the campus.
"Let me say that I do not believe handguns belong in a university setting, in a campus environment dedicated to education and research, but nevertheless as president of a public university, I am responsible for implementing" the new law, he said at a news briefing Wednesday.
Came across this, didn't know so many other states allowed it
Jon, you ever hear anything about this lawsuit? Can't find much info on it
A dean has quit over it
A prominent dean at the University of Texas has quit for another job because of a new law which will allow students to bring concealed handguns into classrooms.
Fritz Steiner, of the Texas School of Architecture, was named dean at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design after resigning his post in Austin.
Mr Steiner, who has been at Texas since 2001, said he would not have considered leaving if the new law, which takes effect from 1 August, had not been introduced.
He said: "I thought I would be responsible for enforcing a law I don't believe in.
