Forego the debit card and use a credit card. This way people don't have direct access to your money and there is a company with a vested interest in filtering out bogus charges.
My CC info was recently stolen. I woke up one morning to an email from my CC company saying they thought there were suspicious charges on my card. I logged in and, sure enough, there were a few charges from a company I've never heard of totaling around $2k. I called my CC company and they closed that account, overnighted me a new card, transferred the legit charges to the new card, and I wasn't liable for the BS charges.
Sorry to hear about your troubles, KVR. I hope you got your money back.
