Hi, I live in southeastern Oklahoma.  I'm just starting the search for some land I can eventually make into a homestead.  I am trying to learn all I can about self sufficiency.  I am a mom of three boys.  My husband is really not into this at all, and I would love to have some other people to talk to, plan and share ideas with.

Thanks KVR and Gravel Road.  No, KVR, not really, in spite of my efforts. His reply to my attempt to discuss eventually getting a dairy cow (we live on a little acreage, but not set up for self-sufficiency) was "isn't that what Braums is for?"

that is going to be difficult to overcome, do you garden much now? If so does he see the cost savings in that?

I agree.  I convinced him to get chickens 3 years ago.  He really didn't want to, but he likes getting free eggs from our kitchen scraps, so there may be hope for other things.  Oklahoma has been a tough place to garden.  I tried last year, but most of my plants didn't thrive.  The wind and extreme weather is hard on the plants, and I haven't got much time to give them with a baby and a toddler to care for.

Marjory Wildcraft's DVDs might be a good resource for you, iirc she is in texas and deals with similar issues

I had bought the original dvd's, she has since changed the title to grow your own groceries, but the trailer appears to be the same so I am not sure if she changed much more than that

she also has a pretty decent youtube channel

You might find it a lot easier to do some container gardening in pots/old buckets/even wood boxes (make sure you have drainage).  A few plants in some pots can be done for only a small investment and you could do a couple of tomato and pepper plants and maybe some herbs for cooking.  If you upcycle containers you would only have to spend probably less that $20 on some small starter plants/few simple seed packets/some bagged soil... and the produce would pay for itself and give you some gardening experience.  Nice thing about container gardening is that weeds are not an issue...need to stay on top of watering and you can place plants in protected areas to keep them out of the wind.  You Tube has a lot of stuff on container gardening.
