Enjoyed reading through this discussion and thought I'd add my 2 cents since we also live in California though maybe at the 'other' end from JSW .
Having HAND built our last house (a picture which I can't download at this moment), I have to say we really thought it would be our LAST house too. But the area we built in changed and heck we had been there for nearly 20 years so after we found our next location (current place), we sold and moved on. Yes, as one ages, needs and abilities do change. But staying with a house due to sentiment may not be a very good idea. Moving and having a house built for us (didn't have energy or want to take years again) was a VERY good idea.
And as a teaser for any and all those reading and thinking California is totally over priced - how about a little older house (in decent shape) on 3/4 acre on the out skirts of a small town (pop. 700-ish) for $65K?!? Plenty of room to 'urban' farm, remodel for resale and check out 'next place' in area for probably less than the cost of rent? Yes jobs are dismal here, but if one is willing to WORK, there's a BUNCH of retired (with some $$s) folks who do need 'services' that the local Cadillac cowboys & gals aren't willing to do.
Just a thought.

that's pretty amazing, I thought everything was hundreds of thousands of dollars out there
Yes that is the 'press' that California gets . What most people don't realize is the size and scope of California. It has been rightly said that California has everything the rest of the nation has - ocean beaches, snowy mountains, forests, deserts, agriculture plains, mega cities and 'blink and miss it' tiny towns. The far north counties have a history of (twice) starting to secede from California and Oregon creating what would then be the State of Jefferson. And because there were natural resources (lumber, fishing, agriculture, water) in this area that never was 'allowed'. So house prices here reflect the more rural reality of this area.
