Hello! My name is Danee. My husband and I just got married in July and moved out to West TN. We met in school at Penn State, but were living apart up until the wedding. I was in East TN on my parent's farm and he was still up in PA. He got a job out here in West TN and so we begin our journey. We have been house hunting with no luck. For a while now, I have been very intrigued with the idea of having an off grid homestead. Before we were married, we talked about what we would want for a home and we semi-joked about just buying land and putting up a tiny house. Flash forward a few months, and that idea may become our reality. I decided to join a forum (my first ever. I don't have any sort of social media account and I refuse to buy a smart phone) to get some ideas from people about possibly going this route. We are both very excited about the idea of going off grid, but we aren't sure how to best go about it. We are playing around with the idea of staying in a tent or buying a small RV and slowly building. I will be around asking questions, getting ideas, and picking y'alls brains to see if my husband and I should throw caution to the wind and start from scratch. I look forward to conversing with all y'all.

Hey DC, welcome!
Congrats on your decision, it's gonna be a journey! Might I advise against the tent option for several reasons:
1. Tents get hot/cold very easily. The last thing you want is to be behind schedule and stuck in a tent over winter. Not to mention all the hard work you're going to be putting into your house, at the end of the day climate control is really nice.
2. Critters. Waking up in the middle of the night to a brave raccoon ransacking your oatmeal isn't any fun for anybody (except maybe the raccoon)
3. Morale. A tent is not a home. 4 walls and a roof make a big psychological impact whether you realize it or not.
That being said there's some really good resources here on the forum for you. I believe there is a thread in the DIY/construction forum with a bunch of tiny house plans you might want to start with. Good luck and keep us posted!

First of all, welcome to the site, as KVR has said, there's lots of great info on here. Agree with others, a tent is not a good idea, especially over winter, you could check into a small, used camper to live in while you build your house, they're safe & you're protected from weather & animals.
