im almost ready to put the Blackberry out to pasture and I'm debating b/w Iphone or droid. i notice the HSB members seem to be mainly on droids. the first knock on iphones form me is the non replaceable battery's . after 1 year or so i like to change batts for fresh ones . a plus for iphones however is that there are Mother earth news apps that dont go droid.

re the homesteading/prepping theme does one win over ?

I can't comment on either of them as a phone, but I can comment a little.

My daughter has the latest itouch and I have a droid tablet. Basically the same thing as a phone, but without the actual phone feature - just wifi. The biggest differences for me are:

I can get into the core of the operating system and modify things if I wanted to in the droid.

I can make my own apps for the droid but I would have to pay for a developers license ($100/year) to be able to do that with apple.

I can transfer music/movies/whatever and play dozens of formats with the droid. I hate itunes and their DRM is crap.

I will say that I think the overall ease of use is better on the apple.

Also since anyone can make untested droid apps, the threat of viruses and malware is a lot greater with the droid. Also android is basically open source so hackers have an easier job.

We currently have every iphone model out. My wife has 4s, I use the 4, My little girl uses a 3g. We also have a first generation and 3gs sitting on a shelf. We have never ever had any problems with any of them. We even washed the 3gs through 2 water cycles in the washer. Dried out in a bag of rice for 3 weeks and completely dried out and works great.

I enjoy having a few hundred thousands apps to choose from not just a few thousand. I Love itunes. I really just use itunes as a storage library. I don't buy a lot of music from them unless I can't wait to get the cd, Then buy the cd anyway. I'm old school, I like having hard copies of stuff.

I'm not to crazy about the free maps gps that comes with the phone.

The apps do it for me. I have gardening apps, electrical and hvac apps for my job. I have lowes and home depot apps with gps to find the closest stores. Even some of our supply houses have iphone apps. I have apps to autotune my voice while growling death metal vocals at little children. My phone can FART for god sakes.

I bought my wife a macbook almost 5 years ago on mothers day. Has only had to restart it once on a update! Plus we could sell it tomorrow used for what a new pc laptop would cost. I wish every company had quality control for their products like apple does.

My life is complicated enough. I just want my phone to work.

I have had an iPhone and now an Android. I dont like either. Half of it is conspiracy type issues. I just dont trust what either company is really doing with the data they harvest.

Im thinking of going unlocked with an old Nokia and hop on a prepaid ATT plan or something.
