I went to this old western theme town in Colorado and they had a little gold panning station setup. It was actually hard for me to get the feel to adding the water and letting it out with a little bit of sand at a time. I gave up pretty fast but think if i stuck to it I would have got it.

12-Pound Gold Nugget Found In Ballarat, Australia, Could Be Worth More Than $500,000

When I was younger we went up to Mount Baker and there was a guy gold panning. He actually kept the largest piece that he ever found on him and it was just a small little nugget maybe a quarter of an ounce. He said it was more for fun and less of getting rich although hitting it big was always good. Back then (1999ish) gold was at 290 bucks. That big nugget I posted above was found with a 6000 $ metal detector. Pretty good investment.
