I have not tried the mod DayZ yet.

I play most the Arma games as a wreck recovery pilot.

you need arma 2 and operation arrowhead and the dayz mod, I thought I read somewhere you could use the trial software for the first two, I may be wrong on that though

http://dayzmod.com/f.....p?tid=2421

the biggest issue is there is a million different ways to install this since it is still in alpha testing, here is the most stable and easiest methods, I used the 6 updater method and it works with that, but doesn't work through steam, some people have had success with the dayz installer

yeah, there is a definite sharp learning curve on this, I have been toying around with it the last couple nights,

I am currently headed north, I am sitting in a tree stand, I have no water, no food. I found a shotgun in a barn but no ammo. I hear zombies all around, Save Me Big Tuna!

watched some youtube gameplay of this. looks cool. hagarules and i may have to join you guys.

kvr, from the gameplay videos, it seems if you crouch and take your time you should be able to avoid the zombies.

interesting talk by some of the video commentators about player killing. groups of people will tell other players in trouble where they are and then ambush them. i gather that murderers used to get a "bandit" skin on their player to warn others, but it has since been removed.

it's funny listening to some of the live commentary. sounds like a saturday morning hunting show-talking in whispers, on the edge nerves, and nervous energy when they shoot someone. i think one commentator was getting depressed talking about how lonely this post apocalyptic world was and he was actually ticked when another player he encountered wouldn't chat with him.

yeah, the bandits add a whole different level to the gameplay, basically it boils down to don't trust anybody.

I have only played it a couple hours over the past week and so far these are the things I have learned how not to die in the first 3 minutes

You don't start with a map and compass, you can find them in buildings and such, but you start out with a back pack, bandage and pain pills.

To get around this I open a website with a map of the game in the background.

When the game first loads in the bottom right hand corner it will tell you which beach you are on, from there just hit alt tab and the game will minimize you can use the map as a point of reference where you are and have some idea where you are headed. If you get lost, just log out of the game and head back to the server lobby and log back into the game and it will tell you in the bottom right hand corner where you are.

That's the cool aspect of this game is where ever you are in the game, whatever you are carrying, whatever your blood level is, it is the same whenever you switch to a new server. The only thing I have seen change was my hunger level, I was near starving and logged out, the next day I logged in and my hunger was full, I'm sure they will fix that glitch.

Once the game starts and you land on a beach, run, run for your life towards the hills. I have tried sneaking past zombies and bandits, and after spending 30 minutes crawling around on your belly across a field and road and still getting a zombie chasing you,(besides the controls are clunky, by the time you stand up to start running the zombie is already on you, it's better to hit x and crouch run, if you need speed just double tap w and it will stand you up and get you sprinting, use third person view so you have a wider field of view) I just sprint for the hills. There is only 2 ways you can slow a zombies speed, entering a building or running up a hill. If the hill is to steep it will slow you down as well so I prefer to zig zag up it, once you break over the top run down at angle and take off. You will hear the zombie behind you if they are still chasing, don't stop to look around unless you don't hear them anymore. If you are over 300m away or they lose view of you the zombies will stop chasing, but will still amble around looking for you where they lost you.

Stay away from cities until you have some gear or you have team members.

Look for trees stands and barns, you can usually find guns.

If I am in a rush I'll look for a barn that is at the base of a small hill, I'll sprint through the barn and get the zombies chasing me and run right up the hill and as soon as I crest it I'll circle around the back side and re enter the barn while the zombies are looking for me on the hill side. I have only had a zombie respawn in the barn once by the time I got back, but they are slower than death in buildings and walking up stairs and once they lose line of sight they just roam around down below. Zombies respawn though, so don't take your time.

I haven't even scratched the surface of what this game is capable of, hungry? Kill a animal and cook it, can't find north, use a compass and watch(if you have them) and find north buy using real world land nav skills (that's how realistic they are trying to make this game) Tired of walking? Find a car or heli and find the parts and fuel to fix it ( from what I have read this takes a lot of people and a lot of time)

If you can find the power lines, they are a good route to explore in land skirting along towns, stay in the tree line and don't silhouette yourself on a ridge line, in case bandits are following you, always check your back trail.

This isn't a first person shooter, guns are nice to have and find, but your biggest needs are food, water, bandages and pain pills. Shelter is a part of that also, there is a body temp function but they haven't totally exploited that one yet. What good does a gun do when you are starving from thirst, you can find a canteen and get water from ponds and such.

Like BT said there are updates almost everyday, it's in alpha testing and things change quickly.
