my wife had injured her back years ago and it has flared up from time to time, well I guess when she was hauling firewood or shoveling she messed it up.
According to the MRI
small anular osteophytes at l3-l4 and l4-l5. Slight disk narrowing at l4-5 and l5-s1. Possible facet arthritis at l4-s and l5-s1
anyone have a clue what this means, my wife had her mri 2 weeks ago and the referral still hasn't been scheduled yet

I had surgery on my L5 S1. Biggest mistake of my life. Scar tissue built up around the disc he took out and is doing the same thing the rupture was doing, cutting off the nerves. Four discs above the L5 S1 are bulging and can herniate anytime.
I'm not sure what all your doc is talking about there but I hope everything is ok. People don't know what it's like when the back goes. I've been in almost constant pain for 23 years. If it wasnt for my wife, son and grandson we would be living in a weed patch.
I think osteophytes are bone spurs. Could be wrong.

I deal with back pain on a regular basis. My chiro said I had a bone spur not sure it bothers me tho. I'm fine at work, its not till the ride home and relaxing at home do I tighten up and ache very bad.
My wife rubs my back every night, my lumbar region gets so sore even light touches hurt like hell.
I have a inversion table but can never fully relax on it to get benefit.
Hot baths are good
I recently started icing. I have a ice pack I will lay on for 20 mins while I read. This has done wonders, I wish I would have started this years ago.
Check out Dr' sarno's books. Interesting reads about back pain and other ailments
I don't know what any of that means, but I have had back problems. I slipped a disc many years ago, and about ten years ago my chiro diagnosed me with a swollen disc. Yoga has helped me so much! I'm talking about very gentle Hatha yoga. There are a lot of types of yoga some of which are very demanding. There are also homeopathic remedies that help with pain.
I know several people who had surgery and it ruined them

Sorry to hear about your wife. OSHB is right, osteophytes are small bone spurs that form due to chronic or acute trauma(or just plain old wear and tear). Disc narrowing happens as the disks age or become injured. The discs are basically the shock absorbers between your spinal vertebrae. Facet arthritis is arthritis of the joints where the nerve root exits the spinal canal. You will mostly feel pain down the leg of the side that has the facet arthritis. From the report, I would think that most of her pain can be reduced by medication and/or therapy. You should always exhaust all non-surgical remedies first. From what I see there is about a 50% long term success rate with spinal surgery.
