A 1x1 px png transparency would have the same effect sized with html (or css).

Why are you trying to do it this way? It's a peculiar approach.

my thought was if it was a set image like the background it would be responsive, looks like I need to research some more,I knew I should have kept taking those computer classes

Responsive aka you've been having difficulties with the site being slowed down. You're thinking fewer files loaded will equal less sluggishness.

To a degree that is correct, but in this case, there are other ways to try keeping the site lean. This sort of implementation is asking for a nightmare of alignment issues trying to keep your link area over that background.

Generally, slowdowns are going to originate from 3rd party crapware, trackers, social media (mostly crapware), and advertising.

So you can have a process of elimination, try placing all your 3rd party stuff into their own includes file or as one includes file for ads and the other for all other 3rd party stuff.

In this way, you can disable all the 3rd party stuff by de-referencing the includes. That way you can focus on optimizing just the site. Additionally you can add (then remove) one 3rd party item at a time in it's own include to see how it impacts performance.

In this way, you are effectively setting up on/off switches that you can play with while trying to optimize the site.

No. Its complicated and is a part of my life I walked away from. I've allowed myself to forget a ton. You're getting the leftovers. There are lots to spare. I was initially hesitant to venture into the subject, but as I had mentioned in another thread, its in my nature to share information so I caved and spoke up. lol
