I was talking to groinkick on chat last night and he was expressing a desire to pick up and move from NJ, but his wife is resistant due to family, friends etc. Obviously I have and I have some thoughts on the subject, but have any of you guys or girls done it that could offer some good advice, or pros and cons of it?

i am in the same situation. i wouldn't mind going to live somewhere far for a few years, but my gf wouldn't.

my sister did it. she moved from Montreal to San Francisco about 3 years ago. She's alone there and i don't think she made that much friends (nerd) but she seems well

i would go somewhere cool like brazil or costa rica. actually i'm pretty open. i love travelling and i would like to visit pretty much anywhere in the world. If i like the vibe somewhere i'd live there.

My sister visited SF on vacation and liked it. When she came back, she asked her boss if she could get transferred to their SF office. They said yes and arranged visa and paid for the moving fees.

Sim, when I was younger I dated a girl and her family ended up moving back to Costa Rica. So I took 6 months and went down there to live with them. It was awesome. The people were friendly and the lifestyle was laid back. Her father would come up here for a month and work like a dog doing 12-15 hour days 7 days a week then go back there and live like a king for the rest of the year. I think he occasionally drove a taxi there if he needed some extra money or just to get out of the house for a bit. It was a vacation lifestyle in a cool place to be.

We moved to WV from CA, though the only one still in CA was my dad. He is still there, but he's 86, and is finally considering moving out this way. My mom had already moved to Texas, my sister is in Idaho, and my brother is in Vegas (his family lives in Utah.) So we're all over the place. My husband's family is in Ohio, so they are only about 4 hours away.

I love living here, I love that we have so much more than we did in CA, more land, etc. But I very much regret leaving my dad. We talk almost every day, but I worry so much about him. There isn't much opportunity here and it has been a struggle for a long time, at least for my kids. They don't have the opportunity they would have had in CA (cheaper community colleges, a lot more career options, etc) but on the other hand they do love the farm and 2 are getting ready to move back and build their own homes. It's really a mixed bag. At least we're all still in the U.S. I can't imagine moving out of the country.

On another note, we lived in Florida for a while, and it was very sad to see so many elderly people all by themselves with no family. They left their hometowns to retire in Florida, but honestly I don't think they thought about what they're going to do when they get elderly and can't take care of themselves any more and NEED family. Not trying to be a bummer here, but it's something you really need to think about.

When I moved to WV , although it wasn't that far from Baltimore, to my family and friends it was. I'm kind of shy and it is hard for me to make friends so I felt pretty lonely a lot.

Through home schooling we met mottleys family.

My one sister is planning to move here and build with us. I have a daughter in mississippi and a grand child I have never met, and I have a daughter and grand kids in Ohio which is pretty close.

Danger moved out to CA and now to WV

The lack of opportunity to make a living here is a major challenge.

I really agree about the need for family.
