tell me your thoughts on Canadian Health Care, I am hearing more and more that the failure of the affordable care act is just going to be justification of a single payer system.

I have heard horror stories of the Canadian Health Care system as you have heard of the US system.

So what are your personal thoughts?

For me it represents great value. Our per capita health expenditures are reasonable, and from that we get good service.

If you have a serious issue you will get taken care of quickly. If you have a quality of life issue you may end up waiting.

I've been to the hospital with a potentially serious issue, put through emergency in a matter of minutes, and had an appointment the next morning with a top specialist no further out of pocket than what I contributed via my taxes. I've also been to emergency with something minor (aka, neither bleeding or broken) and waited 4 to 6 hours.

Like anything else it is a matter of execution. If done well it can be a great system, if done poorly it is going to suck.

Canada has an interesting system; rather than nationalized healthcare, they have nationalized health insurance. Thus, unlike Cuba, France, and just about every other industrialized country that has nationalized healthcare currently, Canadian doctors are not employed directly by the state. As far as nationalized healthcare systems go, I think their's is better than most (as far as keeping costs and taxes relatively low); however, to my understanding, like most government run systems, there can be a rather long wait for care in some cases (As Kamikaze pointed out already). It doesn't sound like it is perfect, but I’d wouldn't let it stop me from moving North (if I found the right job up that'a way).

i don't know about other provinces (because healthcare is provincial jurisdiction) but this is not true in Quebec.

All healthcare employee are state employees

Interesting; that's good to know. From what I had understood, I thought it was national; guess I learned something new. Thanks for the info Sim. :D
