I found myself experiencing winter this year. In the past when a car heater clunked out it was usually a huge bill and cheaper to just get another beater.

Bought a beater pickup when I got back up North and sure enough the heater was blowing cold air. 

Below is what fixed my heater issues, it also fixed a buddies AC in a newer F350.

I used a water hose and left a two way port that I can screw a hose into whenever I like to give it flush.

I like it!  I have done it a couple of times with good results.

One thing to keep an eye open for is that sometimes there is a check valve and if you trying reversing the flow that check valve will lock you up.

My dad would always just take off the hoses at the firewall and shove a garden hose over the inlet and let the water drain over the yard, different times
