Wat do?

She's a smart girl, wicked smart. Stresses about tests and grades but just totally despises school. She could have graduated this year her Junior Year if she would have taken a night english class one day a week to satisfy the 4 year english requirement. Basically all she has to take next year is that one english class and a crap load of study halls. She chose not to because she enjoys her friends and the social interaction.

She gets letters from colleges every day and just throws them in the trash. She has no interest in college after graduating. She says our restaurant is her back up plan. She currently works several nights a week doing dishes. Personally I don't want her involved with the restaurant, I would rather see her use her brains and not end up regretting not going on to college.

Anyone gone through this or have suggestions on how to approach her about it, I am not one to push my beliefs or thoughts on my daughter, I would just like to lead her in the right direction.

I was never a fan of school, and only achieve reasonable grades, unless it was a course I liked.

I did not want to head to college/university after school either, so I took a year off, then went to school. It was sort of a deal I had with my parents, I could take a year off and live at the house for free, but after that I would have to head back to school.

It was nice to have a year off and make some money, and the great thing about working for a year is it gives you perspective on what working like that for 30 or so years is going to be like. With working at the restaurant a few nights a week coming as almost a break from school it might be something she enjoys more than school right now, however with a full year of working 40 hour weeks that might wear off and she could realize how awesome school is relative to the grind.

That's not a bad agreement KE, take a year to find yourself, then it's college or start paying bills

she needs to see that the restaurant isn't her backup plan. A degree could be though.

She can get involved in the restauran and something happens, you have to close it or whatever, she will get nothing. But if she has a degree, even though she doesn't do anything with it, she can get a good job if the restaurant closes.

agreed, what I would like to happen, in a ideal situation, is to have her go find her passion in life, whatever that is, then have her go work 5 years in that field to learn everything there is to know about it, then help her open her own business, to be honest, i'm really not looking forward to paying for her schooling, we make to much for grants, hopefully she can score some scholarships, but everything else would be loans or out of pocket, U of Maine is almost 80,000 for a in state degree, that's crazy. But like I said, I don't want her to have any regrets, I'm happy with our life, but I wonder sometimes what would have happened if I had stayed with pre-med, she obviously got her brains and good looks from me.
