Drivers licenses and other documents may no longer be issued to dead people under a proposed law that that would require the state Motor Vehicle Commission to check Social Security records.
The bill sponsored by Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo, D-Middlesex, goes to the full assembly after it was released by the Transportation Committee on Thursday. The bill was introduced after a state audit in March found the MVC issued documents to 300 people who Social Security records listed as deceased.
The bill requires the MVC to run a monthly check against federal Social Security Administration databases. The March audit reviewed 8.2 million MVC records.
