Life sucks and if a little pill or a gallon of booze helps people will seek it out.Society has become one that looks outwards for happiness not inwards. Sadly, looking outwards is comparing ones life to others instead of what you seek for yourself. So when we have what others have and are still not happy the cycle continues.
Above probably does not make sense but for this person who has been a addict (and quit) of a few things through life it seems to be the way it goes. The fellow on the island understands the cycle, he is and should be nothing more then the grain of sand on the beach. If he is anything more there needs to be checks and balances.

Dr Andrew Kolodny is an addiction specialist who advocates for reform in opioid drug policy. He says: "They launched a marketing campaign and an educational campaign to convince the medical community that we had been underprescribing opioids. To convince us that we had been allowing patients to suffer needlessly because of what they called an overblown fear of addiction."
At the hospital I work at, new placards with the "Patient Bill of Rights" were posted a couple of years ago, with a new section about the patient's right to pain control. A big part of they push to make patients happy is that reimbursement is closely tied to patient satisfaction and survey results. It never dawned on me that it might it might be in part to pharmaceutical marketing. It's amazing how many people are allergic to everything but Diluadid, and reference those Patient Bill of Rights when asking for it.

i broke my ankle 4 years ago. They put a titanium plate in there to hold everything together. They said they would remove one of the screws a little later.
When i came back to remove that screw (10 minutes surgery), the doctor prescribed me 70 pills of oxycodone. I'm scared of those things so i only took when really necessary. Turns out i took 4 and returned the rest to the pharmacist.
Some people probably take the whole thing without thinking like you would do with antibiotics and then they are hooked. Some people probably go and sell the extra pills to addicts on the street.
Anyway, i thought that this doctor was a bit excessive with his prescription.
my daughter had ear infections bad when she was little, when she was about 2 or 3 she woke up in the middle of the night screaming in pain, so my wife took her to the ER, the other option was waiting for 12 hours until our primary care opened up, they prescribed her oxy's; for a 2 year old

Or if you're a prepper, you store them in a cool, dry place for when shtf. What were you thinking, taking them back???
I have several herniated discs in my neck, and I've had the exact opposite experience. I've never gotten anything more than percocets (and only the 5 mg at that). Now they have written that script for a large number though(90), but with no refills.
And yes, I'm terrified of opiates. This last time, the pain was really bad when it first happened, and I was having to take the percocets more than I was comfortable with and suffered quite a bit of anxiety over the whole situation.
