Someone growing up that you were always at odds with or battling?
For me it was Willie, my earliest memory of Willie was on the playground in first grade. Everyone said don't mess with Willie, he was a stocky kid that conveyed strength, even at 6 years old.
In second grade I threw a snowball and got tackled by Willie and he proceeded to pound the heck out of me and then embarrassed me in front of the other kids standing around.
The next year we moved and I didn't see Willie again till 9th grade when we moved back into the area and I showed up at wrestling try outs. Willie was there, he looked the same, but he was a good 6 inches shorter and wasn't quite as intimidating.
We both made the JV team and literally beat the shit out of each other on the mat for the next 2 years, I was working out aggression and he just liked to inflict pain.
Here we are our sophomore year. I am in the back.
The last match of that year, Willie decided to bring a water bottle filled with peppermint schnapps onto the bus for the ride home in celebration.
Coach found out and two days later Willie was kicked off the team, permanently.
I excelled in sports for the last two years while Willie took a darker route through high school, his family life was not the best and once he lost sports as a focus, he kind of went off the deep end.
We all graduated and were waiting to move on with our life that summer, whether it be the military, college, or etc in the fall.
One day in late June the alarm went out, a child had fallen over the dam into the local river. Everyone that was able mustered and started scouring the riverbed, I took my girlfriend at the time and cut across the the back road down by the bend and started working our way back to town.
We were about half way back to town when I noticed a traffic accident up ahead, I slowed down and the police was waving us through and I thought that car looks familiar. I looked to my right and saw Amy covered in blood sitting on the side of the road, Amy, Williy's girlfriend of 3 years. I pulled over and ran back to her, her eyes were fervently searching back and forth from the shock until she saw me, she latched onto me, pleading and screaming at the same time, "Kyle, Willie is trapped in the car"
I told her don't worry. I will go check on him. I ran to the crumpled car where the FD was trying to extract him, he was fighting with them and screaming to leave him alone. I reached out and grabbed his hand and quietly said Willie, calm down man, it's going to be okay. His eye's found mine and we sat there holding hands as they finished extracting him.
The last I ever saw of Willie was the ambulance that day as they pulled away.
I logged into my facebook account today and saw that Willie recently passed away. It is hitting me harder than I thought. He was a good kid but dealt with some demons at home that caused him to make poor life choices. 45 is way to young to pass, life is short, embrace it.
