I'd like to know why the ER gave my daughter oxy for an ear infection when she was 3 if this is the case

The Food and Drug Administration has approved limited use of the powerful and frequently abused painkiller OxyContin for children as young as 11 years old, the agency announced Thursday.

Dr. Sharon Hertz, director of new anesthesia, analgesia and addiction products for the FDA, said studies by Purdue Pharma of Stamford, Connecticut, which manufactures the drug, "supported a new pediatric indication for OxyContin in patients 11 to 16 years old and provided prescribers with helpful information about the use of OxyContin in pediatric patients."

I'd want to know why a doc would prescribe Oxy for an ear infection period. I understand treating pain, but that's like rabbit hunting with a howitzer.

There are a lot of drugs that we use in medicine that have "off label" uses.  Valium is not approved for acute seizures, but we use it all day every day.  Doctors have a lot of leeway when it comes to prescribing pain meds, but a lot of them don't use it due to the chance of investigation and discipline.

Sometimes I hate big pharma.  Nothing like making one of the most abused prescription drugs (and IMO the gateway drug for heroin) available to more people.  All done so that they can keep their patent for 7 more years.

Statue of limitations up on malpractice??  Maybe early exposure could be the root cause of her panic attacks??  (I don't believe that, but it sounds good)

seems this is how they use to get around it

Although OxyContin was prescribed to children and adolescents prior to its approval in a practice known as "off-label use," it is likely to be prescribed much more widely now that it is officially approved, doctors say.
