well, I guess it was the head gasket, at least one good thing was it happened to dad instead of my daughter out on the road, thanks dad!

well, looks like this might have been part of the issue, the radiator is plugged, I asked if the conditioner would have caused it, was told no, googling tells me it has been a issue with others, awesome
