Some small Toyota. Never dies, low cost, not too fast, low maintenance.

Seconded. Japanese import. Two seater (will she drive a p/u)....no need for a teen to chauffeur more than one other kid...they tend to loose their minds in larger groups.

In line 4 cyl=less insurance, less maintenance, forgiving. Something to be said for driving a manual as well.

Too bad you can't get GPS as an option because they are going to test you and the extent of their freedom within the 1st year of driving.

And the monkey presses the button.

Up by you I'm sure the 4wd is almost a necessity. Gotta weigh that against the reliability of a Honda/Toyota

I would get your Saab back up and running as a first recommendation. There is a large aftermarket of parts out there. My second suggestion, sort of in line with your specs, is a 4x2 Ford Ranger stick 4 cylinder. Can't have many passengers, slow, good MPG, and I think with some weight in the back it would be fine in the snow -- long shot is you put snow tires on it. They are also super cheap, tough, and easily found. Plus you can put her to work hauling stuff for you.

K -- late 90's to early 00 Subaru 4 cylinders have known head gasket issues -- where they all leak and need to be replaced at just over 100k. Not too big of a repair if you know what you are doing but I think a dealership charges ~$500 or so. If you Google it info is all over the place. We actually bought the near identical car to the one you posted a long time ago but I went with the 6 cylinder to get past the head gasket issues. Great car but bad MPG as the 6 cylinder. Had good traction.

thanks for the info pork, the saab is almost ready for the road, one thing I forgot to mention, it's a turbo 5 speed convertible, daughter doesn't feel comfortable with the 5 speed part of it, I'm not comfortable with the turbo convertible part for her lol

moro, thought is trading the saab in on something is my contribution, anything beyond that she pays out of her savings, as far as to many seats, it's against Maine Law for a person under 18 to have anyone other then immediate family members ride with them for either the first 6 months or a year, I forget which one
