why is this even allowed in the first place is beyond me

Kansas wants to ban welfare recipients from seeing movies, going swimming on government’s dime

There’s nothing fun about being on welfare, and a new Kansas bill aims to keep it that way.

If House Bill 2258 is signed into law by Gov. Sam Brownback (R) this week, Kansas families receiving government assistance will no longer be able to use those funds to visit swimming pools, see movies, go gambling or get tattoos on the state’s dime.

Those are just a few of the restrictions contained within the measure that promises to tighten regulations on how poor families spend their government aid.

State Sen. Michael O’Donnell, a Wichita Republican who has advocated for the bill, said the legislation is designed to pressure those receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to spend “more responsibly.

We should just lock them in prison while were at it.  That way, we can make sure they don't misuse the assistance they're given.

While I don't think welfare money should be spent on gambling or tattoos, you could make the argument that there's nothing wrong to going to the movies every once in a while.  Everyone deserves a treat.  And who's against the swimming pool?  It's great exercise, and swimming is a life skill (imo).

Welfare should be to cover bare necessity's imo, movies are not a necessity. I stood behind a woman at the counter who used her ebt to take out money and bought lottery tickets and cigarettes with it. I questioned the cashier about it, she said that can't use the the ebt to directly pay for them but they do have a cash allowance that can use for whatever they want. As a taxpayer that offends and pisses me off.

I'm sure there are tons of abuses and misuses.  Probably 90% misuse their money to some degree or another.  And what I'm envisioning is probably miles away from what really happens.  Having said that, I still think these people need to have some kind of joy/etc in their lives.  A movie every once and a while isn't a big deal.  Tattoos, gambling and lottery are.

I've seen so much abuse over the years as a landlord and a business owner, I would say 99 percent abuse it. Mileage may vary though.

quick story, newsettler can confirm this

had this dude working for me as a dishwasher back in 2008 or so, we will call him Dave. Dave was 6'4" and 300 lbs

Dave lived in a town 20 minutes from work. Dave was also a professional wrestler. There is a local school where Dave trained and he competed one saturday a month through out the state.

Dave's car died one day, he had no ride. So he started asking other employees for rides, I think newsettler took him home several times. Dave said he would give them gas money. Now most of my employees live right near work. So they were taking an extra 40 minutes out of their day going to pick him up and bringing him to work.

After a couple weeks Dave stopped paying gas money, no one wanted to pick him up, so he told me that I needed to pick him up. I told him to go pound sand. He said well if he didn't have a ride he couldn't get to work. I replied well then he doesn't have a job.

That's fine, I'll go on welfare.

What, I replied? How the hell are you going to go on welfare? You're a healthy young man and compete in a physical sport, why the hell and how the hell can you go on welfare?

He replied his parents have been on welfare for years and they know how to work the system. This really pissed me off and I said a few things I shouldn't have and never heard from Dave again.

Till a couple months ago. It was a busy Saturday night and I heard the door open, I looked up and Dave was walking in the door with his wife.

Hi Kyle

Hi Dave

So I sat them and a little while after they got their food I went and talked to him, to see how he was doing.

Good he said, and he wanted to thank me.

Thank me? For what?

For saying to me what you said, no one said that to me before and I took it personal, I decided I didn't want to be on welfare so I got a job at a local car dealership as a detailer and I have worked my way up to the parts department. So I wanted to thank-you.

Probably the nicest and greatest thing anyone ever said to me.
