I wasn't sure what to title this Topic.
I have been a lurker on a few sites that are very much 'prepper/survival' web sites. There is some very good info on these sites and some real whack jobs as well.
One question that comes up a lot..."what would you do in a crisis for other people that are not prepared for a survival situation?"
We have thought a lot about this in my home.
In the past my wife opened her home (before we were together) in the winter time to several neighbors when power was out...they had no heat and she had a wood stove...one couple was frail and elderly.
I believe that where we are there could be a 'Katrina like event', we have seen it before with a major blizzard and major north east ice storm...both knocked out power for weeks in my area.
Based on that and our way of living...it's good to have at least a month's worth of food on hand (or more) .... water is not an issue for us due to having a great stream and spring available...alternative heat is a must in my area...generator is good too.
...but, I digress a bit..when there is a crisis (there will be sooner or later) what part of your provisions would you share and with whom?
I think it would be hard to turn away hungry people that are cold and 'lost' with an overwhelming situation...but I struggle with depleting my supplies and resources.
If there is a major event...nuclear strike I don't think we want to live through it...take a case of wine, bread, cheese and chocolate and pets up on the hill and let it unfold.
What would I do for other's, not sure...but I don't see how I could let other's go and freeze and starve...yet, I worry about my family first and foremost and them being safe, secure, warm, and fed...and I worry about people with ill intentions (you got it and I intend to take it)...what am I prepared/willing to do to protect the family and our supplies. I don't advertise what we have, but I am sure people know of me as a 'guy that plans and is ready for a mess' ... to some I am the miserable 'bas****' and to keep away from me, I am very territorial about our land and I don't like uninvited folks, hunter's and fishermen around. But neighbors are a much different story...but we can't plan for all there needs and financially it would break us.
Not sure how this post will be received here...not sure I expect a lot of reply's...I think that the question of 'what would we be willing/comfortable to do for other's is a tough one, and we might not know until we are in it.
I know that I will not give up at least two things: toilet paper and ammo...got to have some priorities...and if you ask my wife, well I am sure wine and chocolate aren't going any where either.
...something we think about from time to time...we usually buy extra pasts and can more sauce.
We are in a unique situation, we have anywhere from 8-10 thousand dollars worth of food in our business at any given time. If there was a katrina like event here, that all would be donated and distributed immediately through the local FD and PD, we would depend on our personal provisions for our family, brother, father and neighbor. If it was a long time event any animals would be slaughtered and preserved. Except for the chickens and dogs of course.

We have talked about it here and we wonder what we would do in such a situation...times of crisis can be challenging on one's mind set.
The area we are moving to is rural and most people have a fair amount on hand, many have chickens and goats and pig here and there and spring/stream water is very plentiful...if it got real bad, well the dairy farmer up the street would donate a cow...if it was that bad things would really be a major mess.

I really thing it depends on the nature of the event. Obviously, if it's a storm, then I would probably be fairly open and sharing. If it was some event with an unknown end date, then they would be on their own. It's a tough situation, but if you don't have that mindset others will and you'll find yourself on the losing end.
On another thread I mentioned that I've kind of giving up on prepping because I didn't thing a SHTF is survivable for most people, and survivablity is more a matter of luck than prepping. The mindset is the other portion of this equation that I've struggled with. I've felt like that depending on the situation, that it might be in your best interest (strictly in the survival sense) to abandon your family. In that I mean if you're at work and your wife is at home, or kids at school that gathering up your family is counter intuitive to survival. So that's the other reason I've kind of abandoned the survival mentality.
