not really the country but tar sands from Canada, I just heard about this the other day

PORTLAND, Maine — More than two dozen people testified this week on a controversial resolution to ban the city’s use of “tar sands” oil, before the City Council voted unanimously to return the resolution to its Transportation, Sustainability and Energy Committee for further review.

Wednesday’s meeting took place three days before what is being promoted as the “biggest anti-tar sands protest in the Northeast” is held Saturday in Portland.

As a crowd that filled the balcony of council chambers looked on Wednesday, environmental advocates, business leaders and residents voiced sharply contrasting opinions about the use of tar sands — a viscous mix of oil, sand and clay that is used to produce gasoline and someday might be piped to Portland Harbor for distribution.

Critics say that because tar sands are heavier and more corrosive than other forms of crude oil, the thick goo can eat its way through pipelines such as the the 72-year-old, 236-mile conduit between Montreal and South Portland.

Lock and load KVR :) Sounds risky if it can ruin the pipes and leak into the water supply.

My great state of Washington almost had to declare war on Canada over them coming to our Costco and creating long lines and shortages LOL.

It is a good thing I just got my firearms permit in the mail. Let me grab a .22 and a couple boxes of ammo and I'll meet you gents on the border! :)

Kidding aside, you guys are not the only ones not happy with the tar sands. Pipelines are a contentious issue here as well. As are the tar sands as a whole.

there is no sand in the pipeline, so their point that it is more abrasive makes no sense. they don't put the tar sand itself in the pipeline, they put the oil they extract out if it.

the problem with tar sands oil is that it uses alot more energy and water while emitting more greenhouse gases in the extraction process than conventionnal oil.
