so it's been just over 48 hours, let's see what is happening in brazil
We may already have our strangest and most amusing story to come out of the Rio Olympic games.
Paul Kelso, a journalist for Sky Sports in the UK, reported on Friday that an Olympic kayaker had capsized after hitting a submerged couch.
No, really.
The report, which immediately sparked the #kayaksofa hashtag on Twitter, was not corroborated by anyone else. Nevertheless, the organizers are taking it seriously enough as to investigate it.

The 2016 Summer Olympics are scheduled to begin today, but for some it has already begun with a bang.
Upon their arrival in Rio, a bus full of Chinese basketball reporters was caught in a roadside gunfight. Six locals were killed in the exchange, but no Chinese casualties have been reported.
Initially, the Chinese-language Basketball Magazine posted on Weibo that Chinese national basketball team players had been caught near the flurry of bullets, where they would have presumably suffered from flashbacks to their two exhibition matches against Team USA last month.

Russia's embassy in Brazil has denied a report by Rio police that their vice consul in the Olympic host city got in a fight with a mugger who was killed in the struggle.
Rio de Janeiro's homicide branch said the vice consul "reacted to an attempted assault."
"The vice consul got into a physical struggle with the assailant and during the fight the aggressor's weapon fired shots. The assailant died of his wounds on the spot."
The Russian embassy in the capital Brasilia issued a statement saying that "no representative of the Russian consulate general in Rio de Janeiro was involved in an attempted assault ending with the death of the suspect."

A gate of the Maracana Stadium, the host venue of the Rio Olympics, had to be forced open after organisers reportedly lost the key.
Julia Carneiro, a BBC reporter in Rio de Janeiro, captured the incident on video outside the stadium, prior to Wednesday’s women’s football match between Sweden and South Africa.
Two men described as ‘firemen’ are seen using a pair of bolt cutters to break the padlock and open the gate.

Chinese athlete Shi Dongpeng fell victim to a gastrointestinal grift earlier this week shortly after arriving in Rio de Janeiro to compete in the 110-meter hurdles event, according to Inside the Games:
According to the International Sport Press Association (AIPS), the man then vomited over Shi, who went to clean himself up while the cameraman chased the man out of the hotel.
When they returned, all of the camerman’s equipment had been stolen, as well as baggage belonging to both men.
Surveillance footage showed that they had been the victims of a cleverly organised professional job in which they had been distracted by the apparent drunk.
When the two tried to report the theft to Rio police, they found a two-hour wait due a long line of other people reporting having been mugged.

Olympic thieves have robbed Denmark’s team of mobile phones, clothes and sheets, and even had the cheek to deprive Morten Rodtwitt, the country’s Olympic boss of his iPad.
“It’s extremely irritating,” Morten Rodtwitt, Denmark’s chef de mission in Rio, told Berlingske.
“In connection with the many extra workers, cleaners and housekeepers who have been squeezed into the Olympic village because of our requirements and requests, we have been subjected to a series of thefts,” he told TV2.
The thefts come on top of a string of problems with the athletes rooms which have forced the Danish delegation to complain of no fewer than 150 issues with their 36 apartments.

I feel bad for the athletes. You work your whole life for this, actually make the Olympic team in what's probably the one window in your athletic lifetime you will be able to compete against the best in the world, and you get... this...

A bus carrying journalists at the Rio Games has been hit by gunfire on a highway between Olympic venues, witnesses said.
No one was seriously injured in the incident on Tuesday (NZT Wednesday).
The bus was making its way from the Games basketball venue to the main Olympic park when, according to passengers, two shots were heard hitting the vehicle. Windows shattered and flying glass left two people with minor lacerations.
uh, that doesn't look normal
Why is the synchro dive pool green? The one next to it looks normal. #Rio2016 #cbc pic.twitter.com/m46IqE70Hd

oopsies
The "embarrassing" emerald green water in the pools at the Rio aquatics centre that left some athletes with itchy eyes is the result of an unplanned dump of hydrogen peroxide into the water, Olympic organisers said.
A contractor added 80 litres of hydrogen peroxide to each of the diving and water polo pools last Friday, but organisers said they only found out on Tuesday when the water in the diving pool turned green during the women's 10-metre platform final
