It really is. We hear about this stuff all the time because there are more people than there have ever been, which increases the odds of a tragic event like this occurring - and communications being global and instant.
200 years ago, people had like eight kids because four of them were probably going to die before they became adults. A broken arm could kill you from infection. Hell, the doctor treating you for that broken arm could kill you with some whacked medicine. People died from drinking bad water, and getting the flu. Plus there were wars all the time, not the sanitized cleaned up wars you see now, but ugly, brutal wars. It's all about perspective.
