Ok here is the deal. I got 10k that I have saved up for a new car. I want a Ford Escape, my dad retired from Ford and has a great pension so that is the only thing I will buy. I have talked the dealer down to 15k for a 2011 Ford Escape with 40k miles. And they are giving me 1200 for my beaten to heck Ranger that has 180k miles on it. Keep in mind I am giving them 10k in cold hard cash. Is this a good deal? Kelly blue book says 15800 is the price. How much more should I talk them down from the 15k, or what is the price I should accept. Keep in mind that my Ranger is still running well so I can hold out on a new car for a while. Knock on wood. Keep in mind I have only bought 1 car in my life that wasnt from a family member before (And that was my Danger Ranger).

I would do it then, seems like it's a good deal. Doesn't your dad also get a discount as a ford employee?

I would try to buy a car with the $10k you have -- $10k is a lot of money when it comes to used cars. We haven't spent $10k on a car in 10 years. I would also check Craigslist or other sources for the Escape as a price check. You may sell your Ranger for less on CL but you may get an Escape in similar condition with the same miles for much less, say $11k or so. So you would save quite a bit of cash but lose money on the Ranger sale. And it sounds like you could save up for the $1k difference.

I have sold 6 or 7 cars on CL, bought cars at dealerships, my dad worked at a dealership, etc.

A few of my friends have bought cars that have ended up being crap on CL, so that worries me alot. I also want a newer car thats certified cause they come with a 100k warranty. I know nothing about fixing cars besides the basics and I dont have a trusted mechanic that I know down here in Florida.
