you'd be surprised, as long as you have a flashy ad campaign and can provide people with something; plans, t-shirts, etc. There have been quite a few successful go-fundme campaigns for stuff like that. These guys basically copied Mike reynolds earth ship design and raised 30,000 dollars.
yeah, that is the hard part, Paul Wheaton has been very successful with it, he's raised over 300,000 for playing cards and dvd's of other people's work.
