Well, since we are all here admitting that we work in IT... I do as well.
Chrome OS is pretty decent at what it does, but I am going to agree with Pork one this one. If your primary use for a lappy is just surfing the web, a Chromebook will suit you fine, otherwise you might be disappointed by its limitations. Honestly, I do not consider Chromebooks a full computer; they are a web surfing device with cloud capabilities.
I guess it just depends what you want to be able to do with it. Where I work, most of our applications are heavily dependent upon Java, which rules Chromebooks out entirely (they do not support Java or Silverlight). I will say though, we have one in the office that we bought for diagnostic purposes, and if all you want to do is surf the interwebs, they are pretty smooth.
Having owned and used one extensively, I can assure that's more than just a web surfer. The number if web based services go beyond email and browsing.
