Lost knowledge/knowledge of ancient cultures has always been a fascination of mine. The Romans weren't exactly designing in CAD/CAM. So much that they built has survived. I loved the "showdown" here and the reactions were priceless.
I think what they knew and applied in the design went far beyond any single dynamic. As for the flow, I think they simply understood that as more of the crowd exited, that they needed to accommodate for a bottleneck that would grow exponentially at each tier going down.
