Don't understand why this was an issue, they have been giving exemptions to the beard regulation for years.
He does look pretty sharp.
(CNN)For close to a decade, Simratpal Singh felt torn between the ideals of his faith and those of the U.S. Army.
No more.
The Army has granted Capt. Singh, a Sikh, permission to serve while wearing a turban over his long hair and a beard with his uniform.
He is the first active duty soldier to seek the accommodation and receive it while serving in the Army, according to The Sikh Coalition, the largest Sikh American advocacy organization in the United States.
that is a bad looking man
I knew there was a recent story about this, not sure why they are saying he was the first one to get the exemption
The Sikhs of northwestern India have for centuries cherished their rich military history. Wearing long beards and turbans into combat, they have battled Mughals in Punjab, Afghans near the Khyber Pass and Germans in the bloody trenches of the Somme.
But when Maj. Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi, an American Sikh raised in New Jersey, signed up for the United States Army, that tradition counted for nothing. Before sending him to officer basic training, the Army told him that he would have to give up the basic symbols of his religion: his beard, knee-length hair and turban.
In good Sikh tradition, he resisted. Armed with petitions and Congressional letters, he waged a two-year campaign that in 2009 resulted in the Army granting him a special exception for his unshorn hair, the first such accommodation to a policy established in the 1980s.

a particular set of clothes that has to be worn by the members of the same organization or group of people:
With police I think it is fine to have varied uniforms. In the military not so much. Base dress or appearance on religious factors is incorrect imo. So much of the training and group psychology is based on everyone being uniform. Nobody is special, all the same dress code, same hair cut, march the same etc.
Mostly though it comes down to the fact we fight wars over religion. Once everyone is allowed to choose how they dress we might as well call the uniform a suggested attire.
One day the Pastafarian's will be allowed to wear their colanders? Cause I tell ya, I make a colander look good!
looks like 3 more get approval
