Daughter 17, high honors, hates school, says she wants nothing to do with college.
So the school scheduled college visits yesterday and my daughter decided she would like to go visit colby college.
There might be hope for college yet!
So my daughter signed up for the colby bus and when they went out to get on them, a bunch of kids were not sure which bus to get on, so the teachers in charge said to just get on any bus.
Well, I guess too many kids got on the colby bus and the guidance counselor came on and said, some of you have to get off the bus.
No one moved.
Some of you have to get off the bus or we are not going, we will just go back inside and sit in study hall all day
No one moved.
She then said, listen, this is a Ivy League school, 3/4's of you won't even be able to get accepted, get off the bus now!
By this point my daughter was mad and her and a bunch of her friends got off the bus and went on the Thomas College bus.
She is angry because she wanted to visit Colby and didn't get a chance to, as are her friends.
I have two issues with this, one, the teachers just telling the kids to get on any bus. There should have been assigned seats with a check list for which kid was going to which college.
Second is the fact a guidance counselor who is suppose to be helping these kids with life decisions, basically told every kid on that bus they were to stupid to go there.
Who is she to tell a kid that they will or will not succeed in life based off their grades.
Yeah, that kid might not do well inside the confines and structure of what our public education system is, but I know several people that were horrible D level students in high school and once they moved on to college and were able to pick and choose what their curriculum was going to be excelled and graduated with a 4.0
Just because that child can not get into colby now, doesn't mean they can not start at a 2 year or state school and transfer into Colby at a later date.
And my daughter, for the first time she has shown a interest in college, could not go see the one of her choosing, the one she would have a very good chance of getting into.
I want to call and make a appointment with the principle and have a discussion about it, my daughter says not to. She says I can be a little "hot-headed" at times.
So should I make the call or honor my daughters wishes.

That's a tough call. I would think at least a conversation over the phone would be warranted. Especially if these students signed up for certain visits and the school wasnt prepared to get them on the correct bus. There's no way the students should have been told to just get on any bus. There is a responsibility with the school to make sure the students whereabouts are accounted for and that they are where they are supposed to be. I would probably leave the whole 3/4's of you cant get in there thing alone though.
