how the heck do people think they will get away with stuff like this?
ST. LOUIS - It's official - Andrea Karl, a graduate student at Washington University is the real winner of the 2015 Go! St. Louis Marathon.
On Wednesday, the marathon's president disqualified Kendall Schler for not only this year's race but 2014's as well. Schler took race officials by surprise when she crossed the finish line at 2:50:30 this year. She wasn't wearing her bib in the proper place, and she wasn't being escorted by lead bicycles.
Still, she was declared winner pending validation. She flashed a smile for her picture with Jackie Joyner-Kersee and disappeared without a trace. Four minutes later, Karl with bicycles in tow, crossed the line with little fanfare and no picture with the Olympic gold medalist. It took race officials about 20 minutes to figure out what happened.
Looking into the electronic tracking data, they found that Schler's bib number never showed up in the registered runners at any of the electronic markers along the course. None of the spotters recalled seeing her, and none of the photographers captured her on film.
