damn, a woman died, the accident scene was pretty horrific
One person was killed and another seriously injured in a four-vehicle crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Charlton on Tuesday, causing a 14-mile traffic backup, State Police said.
As cars were slowing down because of heavy traffic on the Turnpike in Charlton, three vehicles including a 2014 Toyota Rav4, a 2011 Toyota Camry, and a tractor-trailer truck collided at 1:40 p.m., State Police said in a statement.
A fourth vehicle, another tractor-trailer, then struck the Camry, ejecting the car’s driver, a 60-year-old man who was not wearing his seat belt, State Police said. His passenger, a 64-year-old woman, was trapped inside the car, according to State Police.
The driver and passenger of the Camry were taken to the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where the woman was pronounced dead, State Police said. Authorities did not release her identity.
Initially the Camry’s male driver was pronounced dead, but he was revived later in the evening, according to Trooper Matthew Guarino, a State Police spokesman. The man, who was not identified, was in critical condition Tuesday night, Guarino said.
No other injuries were reported.
After striking the Camry, the tractor-trailer overturned and the accident created a traffic backup.
Only one lane on the highway remained open, which backed up traffic up for 14 miles and “affected the evening commute out of Boston,” State Police said. Lanes were reopened after 5 p.m.
As of 10 p.m., traffic was “mostly back to normal,” according to Guarino.
