Had the same thing as a sophomore, went to the Doctor's and he asked if I ever had chicken pox, I said yes, he said that's what this is, it is a latent outbreak of herpes from having chicken pox as a child, can't believe the parents are suing and I guarantee the kid had chicken pox at some point
SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KTVU) - It's been a terrifying ordeal for one South Bay family, after their star student athlete was diagnosed with a form of herpes that's left lesions on his face. They said, he contracted it after a Central Coast Section high school wrestling tournament at Independence High School in San Jose back on Feb. 19.
The family now wants the weekend's state wrestling championships to be postponed.
17-year-old Blake Flovin said he started getting symptoms after competing at the CCS tournament. He believes he got the skin infection from another wrestler or a wrestling mat.
Wrestling is Flovin's passion. However, the high school senior said he'll likely never step onto a wrestling mat again after he was diagnosed with a viral skin infection.

It's possible, but I think herpes is prevalent on the wrestling mats (as is ring worm and staph).

With all the skin contact I know there are issues with bacteria on the mats...then you roll them up and they are nice and dark inside, providing a nice environment for things to live in. There are actually guidelines on mopping them down and cleaning them with disinfectant in the mop water. Weather it's done or done right is another issue.

True it can come from something else, but that is usually skin to skin contact, usually staph (impetigo) and ringworm are a bigger concern from mats, if the other kids are not showing any lesions then they should be able to wrestle, if they are, then don't allow them to wrestle, but to postpone a state tournament because someone got herpes is ridiculous for the other hundreds of kids

before every practice we would lay out the mats in the gymnasium and mop them with bleach and water, then we would have to run laps around the mats for 15 minutes for warm-up and to give the mats time to dry, now BJJ on the other hand, I don't think I ever saw the mats washed once, that skeezed me out quite a bit

One BJJ gym I used to belong to, would use a leaf blower on the mats. Made me wonder if you could get staph in your lungs.
