Yeah, I dunno about Sanders. Is he getting a fair shake in the media? Nope. I can't get behind him just based on his platform to be honest. He's got a really big spending plan, and no clear way on how to pay for it. Right now our budget is about 3.2 trillion per year. His plan would add another 2 trillion on top of that. He kinda has some ideas on where that money is going to come from, but he's not really clear on it.

He talks about universal medicare, but that's not the problem. Just like Obamacare wasn't the solution. The issue is that we have the most expensive healthcare system in the world and the quality of care is mediocre at best. Common procedures like joint replacement cost as much as 7 or 8 times what they would in say, Belgium for example. It's literally feasible to travel to Europe, take a month long vacation and have your surgery, pay in cash and still pay less than you would here with insurance. The problem isn't getting people covered or finding a way for the government to pay for healthcare, it's the outrageous cost of procedures in the US. My hernia surgery I got last year cost me $12,000. I have really good insurance through my job so I only paid about 900. But I sat for 5 years with the thing because it was so expensive. I almost went to Mexico to get it done for around 2 grand. That's how big the gap is. Control the cost of healthcare through smart regulation and the insurance market will take care of it's self.
Sanders talks about expanding social security, which I'm all for... if you can figure out how to pay for it. A tax on the 1% isn't going to even put a dent in it. With no clear way on where the money is going to come from it's likely going to land on the backs of the middle class, which is pretty much most of us.
Same deal with free tuition for public universities. Tell me where it's going to come from? More importantly, why is he so focused on secondary education when our primary school system is so fundamentally broken? There are kids graduating high school who can't read, or do simple division. You really think college is going to help these kids?
There's this grand infrastructure project (which the US really does need) and no clear way on how it's going to get paid for. Starting to see a common theme here?
I also don't hear him saying anything about him reducing the current budget. And what I mean by that is our 57% per year spent on our military. Were spending upwards of 1.6 trillion per year to fight a bunch of wars (can we even really call them wars anymore?) for what? Freedom? I dunno. I'm pretty sure we could get away with about a quarter of that budget if we just bring our guys home and shore up our national defense. "But our soldiers will just be sitting around getting paid" you say? What about all that infrastructure repair and building we were talking about earlier. We bring them back, were already paying them, why not teach them a skill they can use once military life is done for them instead of turning them loose with no support and only knowing how to shoot a rifle. I'd like to mention here as well that I 100% support our soldiers who have a very tough job to do. I do not however support the top levels of leadership sending them to fight and die for reasons unknown.
IMO, Rand Paul has some of the right ideas, but he's not his dad. I'm not entirely convinced he's not a wolf in sheep's clothing. At least he campaigns on the promise of a balanced budget and paying off the national debt. Plus getting rid of the IRS altogether, 14% flat tax across the board. I just can't get behind Bernie because it seems like hos spending plan would bankrupt the country.
