Nice, hope they thrive

History was made Monday when the first wild bison was born in Illinois in about two centuries.

"This was quite the surprise," said Cody Considine, restoration ecologist at the 3,500-acre Nachusa Grasslands, a prairie restoration project near Franklin Grove, about 95 miles west of Chicago.

Workers at Nachusa knew that some of the 30 bison that arrived at Nachusa from an Iowa preserve late last year were pregnant, but those animals were expected to give birth at the end of May.
