I had no idea it was that many
At least 116 environmental activists died last year while campaigning against mining, logging, water and land grabs, according to a report.
The number of deaths is rising, UK-based group Global Witness reported, with two people dying on average every week – up a fifth on 2013.
Some have been shot by police during protests or gunned down by hired assassins, its research found, while many more activists are threatened by the companies they oppose.

There is a 'balance' to be taken away from this story - that activists can also be 'wrong' in their actions/beliefs AND that title to property has been removed far from any CUSTODIAL duties on the part of those who claim ownership. It seems that mankind has become overly human centric even slipping into hubris when it comes to trying to dictate what we feel 'nature' OUGHT to 'be'. You bet the scales are very tipped (at this time) towards top -> down so-called leadership which is thinly veiled fascism/totalitarianism at that. However each person is ultimately responsible for their actions/inactions AND if one doesn't acknowledge the old saying about it being cheaper to hire a hitman than a lawyer, perhaps that reality comes to be?
As far as I can tell, organizations like The Nature Conservatory have made some of the best 'statements' in essence putting 'their' (contributions/development) money where their 'mouth' is by buying property and managing it as best they can. Protesting seems to be as short term effective as the nasties that man does to nature, which by the way, nature overcomes better than mankind ever could imagine.
For a great example of how to 'protest' AND thrive - think of the efforts of such as the Amish who develop sustainable homesteads. And even they are finding that they are subject to nature - too tight a gene pool is having its consequences.
Living one's 'protest' is so much more admirable and effective for the protester.
And how about how many 'financial whistle blowers' that have died 'prematurely'?!? Yep, hitman are cheaper and much more effective than lawyers. SAD, so very SAD.
My personal motto - The Home, a peace worth fighting for.
