Finally. The day is coming where B17 may haunt the waters of Minnesota, pulling fish from them as he pleases.

In all seriousness, I can not WAIT to get back to the water. I have done a little bit here and there but its not open season so you are stuck throwing small lures going for panfish. Now its time to take the gloves off and go for the big ones!

I have picked up a few new lures and even a new rod and reel. Now, all I must do is make until Saturday.

Im really hoping to have luck with the 11" worms. I have read that really big pike and bass will hit them but no luck yet. Hopefully this year.

I also have about a half dozen spinner baits as well but I have all but given them up for the French Spinner. They seem to be so much more deadly.

Also looking to get a good baitcaster rig. Right now my MH rod with the spinning reel is broken. I snapped the tip off twice last season so it went from a 7' rod to a 6' and I just dont trust it to hold up to a big fish.

Im thinking of maybe getting a nice MH rod to replace it and keep the reel. The other part of me wants to get a baitcaster. I have never had one though so there would be a learning curve. A buddy is bringing one to work on Friday for me to test out and see if I like it.

baitcaster's take some getting used too. They are much more user friendly now than they used to be, with the adjustable magnetic cast controls on most models. Before I went fly or die, I used to use a baitcaster for most of my fishing, from pitching and flipping jigs to throwing crankbaits and spinnerbaits. About the only time I used spinning gear was when I was finesse fishing weightless worms or throwing ultralight lures.

Thats what I hear.

Are they as hard to learn as fly fishing? If not then Im fine. I can do ok fly fishing but that is a bit hard to teach yourself and I know of no other fly fisherman in my circles. Id like to sell it all if I could, but again, I dont know anyone else, lol.

They just take getting used to, even with the new magnetic controls, I still use my thumb as a brake if I do cast one. Just remember, a birds nest is gonna happen, it doesn't matter how skilled you are with one. Don't get discouraged, stick with it and they'll happen less often. Here's a video on an easy way to clear all but the absolute worst backlashes.

So far its been a very underwhelming opener. I fished a small lake Saturday.

Caught some small bass and this good sized Sunfish.

Sunday I did some gardening and then went back out and got skunked. Im hoping today is much better.

Picked up a baitcaster. An Abu Garcia Revo S. Paired it with a medium heavy rod and 20lb test. I think Im going to take that line off and get somoe 14lb test Big Game line instead.

Abu Garcia is my favorite make on reals. How did the bait caster work?
