I'm sorry, ice fishing just freaks me out, I think it's due to falling through the ice as a kid

I love ice fishing.  Come to think of it, I love any kind of fishing.

Normally we'd have a foot of ice by now, but we don't even have accumulated snow here in Lansing.  Not a problem, though.  I've talked to a couple of people who say the pike are hitting hard in the Looking Glass River right now.  I have to lay some flooring in the attic (made it into a bedroom) on Saturday, and then I have Sun-Tues off.  I really hope I have time to tie some streamers on Sat and Sun night for fly fishing.  If not, I'll hit the river with a spinning rod and bucktail spinners and some good ole Red Devils. I even found some old spoon plugs I got when I worked at a bait shop as a kid.  They are great for trolling, we'll see how they work on a spinning rod. I'm all out of canned pickled pike, so I need to replenish supplies.

I'm really looking forward to taking my kids ice fishing this winter. My father in law retired a couple of summers ago and really needs to get out.  I have an 8 y/o daughter and 4 and 3 y/o sons that really dig fishing.  The 8y/o is a fishing machine, but the 4 and 3 y/o have the attention spans of gnats. I'll probably take a kindle or ipad to keep them occupied after their 10 minutes of fishing is done.

I've never been out that far on the ice.  A couple of miles wouldn't be out of the question, but not 20.  I've been out on the Saginaw Bay, different parts of Lake Huron, Lake St. Claire, in the Straits of Mackinac, Lake Erie, and some of the bays by Traverse City.

I really don't know Lake Superior fishing that well, but I wonder why the fish would be holding in water that deep, even if they were in the top of the water column.  That's a pretty large amount of real estate to just randomly pick a spot and be on the fish.  I'd love to know what their secret is.  It's really hard to get good info about Upper Peninsula fishing online.  The Michigan DNR doesn't publish anything because of how "fragile" the UP fisheries are, and a lot of the Michigan fishing sites won't include subforums or threads for the same reason.
