that's pretty smart for areas you don't have a lot of casting space in, wouldn't want to catch anything to big with it though I would imagine

I have an idea for easier reeling...put an open edge eye bolt right ar the end, underneath the tip. After you cast then just put the line up in the hook for stability as you reel.

You could probably just use a standard guide that's used on a fishing rod.
