lol, my wife was the same way when I was starting the wood stove with lint from the dryer and my magnesium, she was not impressed at all!
Dryer lint is the worst! Although the smell from starting a fire with dryer lint goes away much quicker than the smell from making char cloth. Our house smelled like smoke for DAYS! And my wife made sure to inform me of that.

Never thought about making char rope, good idea. I just made a lot of char cloth last weekend (what I do when shirts have expired). It is my favorite medium when using a ferrocerium rod in my opinion.
I've only tinkered with char cloth a little bit, but have been underwhelmed by it. I'm sure it's user error though. Jute twine unraveled and fashioned into a bird nest is EXTREMELY flammable when hit by sparks from a ferrocerium rod. It was so scary that I thought the twine may have been treated with something flammable. In the past, I've just used paper towels with my ferro rod.
