I've been researching the best calibre for hunting the Pacific Northwest and I have run into a quandary.

I wanted to choose a calibre that would work for both my wife and I and try to keep things simple. Unfortunately, I'm 6'4" and my wife is 5'4". Needless to say also significantly different weight as well.

I had decided to downgrade my calibre choice from .308/3006/.300 win mag to .270 hoping that would not be too much rifle for my wife, but my uncle thinks I need to get her a .243.

Now clearly I need to get her to a range before we know what she is comfortable with, but should I just stop worrying about having a matching calibre in a compromised sweet spot and just find out what works the best for each of us and call it good?

I've gotten a lot of info from many sources, but this is the chart I look at http://1source.bassp.....or-hunting

Depends on what you are hunting for and how comfortable she is shooting, my wife is a small woman and she shoots the heck out of my .308

I think the .243 would be a little under performing, I would probably go with a .30-30 or .300 savage if you aren't shooting long distances

Another consideration is ammo prices, it can get real expensive on range day with the larger calibers and as the saying goes, practice makes perfect

2nd for 308.  I added a limbsaver and a scope and she has zero issues with a wide array of ammo.

And the monkey presses the button.

The 308 is really a nice round; personally, the wife doesn't like to shoot, so I stick with a 30.06.

When I hear Pacific Northwest I think big game, and big bullets.  I think my .308 is more accurate at 200 yds than my 30-.06 with 165gr bullets (for whitetails) but anything larger I use the 30-.06 because the ballistics are better (185gr 2721fps vs 1000fps).  The only big game I've hunted are mule deer and I used 30-.06 185gr.

btw, I'm no ballistics or shooting expert.  My opinion only. I'm sure a good shooter could bring down big game with a .243.  Personally, I'd be worried about wounding an animal.

yeah, I hear that argument all the time, I can take down a deer with a .22 with proper placement!

I just shake my head and walk away
