not sure if this is the right forum for this or not, feel free to move elsewhere.

basically, i'm considering the idea of starting a regular 2 night 3 day camping trip specifically for boys who are either young teen or just about to be teens with the entire trip dedicated to teaching them life skills. i'm looking for input as to what you guys think might be appropriate skills for kids this age to learn.

trip will be by boat to a remote island. tent camping. i think it would start with a fire as any camping trip is doomed to failure if you can't keep a fire going. i'd like to teach them basic celestial navigation, the area i'll take them is quite remote and free of light pollution so the sky is perfect.

what skills would you guys like to have learned as a young boy under these conditions?

things like tying knots, fishing and cleaning/prepping the fish to eat, treating/filtering water, choosing and establish a campsite etc.

i need some ideas to plan a 2 night 3 day skill based trip, any ideas appreciated.

Great idea khun. So many skills that you could teach on a 3 day trip but I would focus on the the most important. Fire,Food,Shelter. Try to teach a bow drill method of fire starting and some common wildlife edibles(roots,Bark, berries) in the area that you are going to. A quick dead fall trap or snare trap would be really useful. Maybe have them learn to build a quick lean to shelter to protect them from the elements.

Something you should really teach them is how to come up with cordage in the wilderness. Cordage could be used for sewing or holding together your shelter. Some examples are using roots from trees or braiding bark together for a good bow drill cordage, maybe even animal sinew for sewing and a bow and arrow string. Maybe those could just be some ideas that you put into there head and focus more on a preventive scenario.

You could show them how to find a rock that creates a spark(for fire) or how to flint nap. That is a great way to make your own knife. Maybe they will come across some animal bones that with the right mindset they could find the potential to make a sewing needle or fish hook out of the bone. So it kinda depends on what you want to focus on. I could ramble on but will post more tomorrow on clearer mind.

WATER i forgot water. Teach them ways to obtain water in different scenarios. Water may be the second most important thing besides protecting yourself from the elements.

thanks for the feedback. like the idea of cordage. it "ties" in with learning knots and as we are in the gulf and everyone goes everywhere by boat it may lead some of these young kids to be deckhands or even capt one day on one of my boats, especially combined with some basic celestial navigation. keep the ideas coming if you have them please, off to the gym now.
