Anchorage police say officers have taken three men into custody after a witness saw the trio stab a moose to death on a bike trail Tuesday in Russian Jack Springs Park.
"We were dispatched to a citizen calling in noticing three males walking around harassing a moose, taunting it and then they witnessed these males striking the moose, jumping on the moose and possibly striking or stabbing the moose ," said Sgt. Jennifer Haywood with APD.
Police received a call from that witness who was on a bicycle just before 7:30 p.m. Shortly after police responded they were able to locate and apprehend the three suspects nearby.
Police on scene say when they arrived they discovered blood everywhere and the moose already deceased.
The moose was described to be a yearling.

Anchorage police have taken three males into custody accused of stabbing a moose to death on a bike trail in Russian Jack Springs Park near Pine Street and Debarr Road. APD Dispatch received a call around 7:20 p.m. from a bicyclist stating that they had observed three males harassing a moose along the trail, and that they started stabbing the moose. Police responded and were able to locate the three suspects nearby; they have been taken into custody. The moose (described as smaller in size) was found dead at the scene. Police continue to investigate the incident. Additional details will be released as they come available.
They sound like real upstanding citizens
Anchorage police announced the arrest Wednesday morning of Johnathan Candelario, 25, James Galloway, 28, and Nick Johnston, 33, on felony animal-cruelty charges in connection with the case. Several callers reported the moose's stabbing to APD at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Court records show that Johnston has at least eight misdemeanor assault convictions since 2000, plus a lengthy record of arrests for domestic-violence offenses. Candelario has prior convictions for fourth-degree assault, unauthorized entry and criminally negligent burning, while most of Galloway's record involves traffic charges.
